The line up will include Ryan Heshka from Canada with his sifi dreamlike cartoon cliche prints, Femke Hiemstra from Amsterdam with her surreal adventures of whimsical animals and soft painterly sorceresses by Uk’s Tom Bagshaw. Atomica Gallery will be launching there new space in Hackney in early 2013 but to give us a teaser of what’s to come they will be popping there surrealist pop art collection and tattoo inspired artworks at Tony’s from the 4th to the 24th of December.

Possesing fire, grace and edgy attitude young Russian London-based alto saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev is a young virtuoso forging an increasingly hight profile international presence. In the short five years since graduating from London prestigious  Royal Academy of Music in 2007, Strigalev has cut  a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. he’s worked with some of todays most forward thinking musicians and appeared at the many of the worlds famous jazz festivals.

Tony’s Gallery is delighted to present ‘Velodrawings’, an exhibition of new works by Christian Grillitsch, an Austrian artist based in Berlin. Christian’s unique genre of drawing involves his expert manipulation of the brakes of a bicycle to create skid marks on white-primed wooden boards. For his first solo exhibition in the UK, Christian has created an installation of large wooden boards presented alongside a series of “insider” videos revealing the image-making process of his work. As a special one-night event, Christian will be performing live on the evening of the preview.

Christian stumbled upon his singular style of ‘velodrawing’ by serendipitous accident when, whilst out cycling, he swerved to avoid a pedestrian, braking harshly. On spotting the tire mark under the wheel, he states ‘I immediately knew that this was it, I found my artistic language’. The artist then became obsessed with experimenting, pushing the limits of both himself and his bicycle, and drawing with the tire rubber all over the city, eventually progressing onto white-primed wooden boards. Although the process is an integral part of Christian’s artwork, and requires intense skill and sharp technique, the drawings themselves become almost instinctive and arbitrary as the mark-making is created in a ‘sliding moment’.
The final result, with the depths of texture and the detailed precision of the marks, opens a space where the gestural process is at once controlled and accidental, dynamic and quietly organic – and where the artist relinquishes some of his control to embrace the almost cognitive input of his collaborator, the bicycle.

Christian studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 2003 under Erwin Wurm. He has exhibited in Austria, Germany, Bulgaria and Italy. Previous art projects include: ‘Re-cycling’ – mapping where parts of old bicycles could be found around the city (Berlin) so that these could potentially be reused by the cycling community and ‘Street Sleepers’ – painting monochromatic line-based sleeping figures on abandoned mattresses discarded in the streets of Berlin.

The preview will be opened by a Velodrawing performance by Grillitsch at 7.30 pm in the car park opposite the gallery.

‘Santa Teresa Hotel ‘Room 479′

Tonyʼs Gallery is delighted to present ‘Santa Teresa Hotel – Room 479’, an exhibition by MisterTheFreak & Faif - a Spanish street art duo who are bringing for the first time in the UK their unique mixture of styles to London. For this exhibition, the artists have created an installation examining the nature of isolation and the notion that ‘happiness is only real when shared’. Alongside the main installation, Tony’s Gallery is making available a number of original prints and canvases.

The viewer is invited to enter ‘Room 479’, a deserted storage space at the Santa Teresa Hotel in Cancun, to experience the bizarre vignette of an unknown man who has been locked inside. The placement of cheerful and playful objects and costumes, originally created to entertain, take on a more ominous tone when one is left ‘alone with the shadows’. The costumes loom over this desolate, tenebrous and almost psychedelic colourful space enticing the viewer closer. Ambient noises drift up from the bar downstairs but the viewer, along with the protagonist of the artist’s story, remains cut off in the immersive environment of the room. An alarm clock is stopped at 04:79. A ping pong game is set up and awaiting players.

The major focus of the installation, the entertainer’s costumes, consists of hand made felt body suits with intricate designs: a skeleton; a zebra; a furry bear; a naked lady; ‘My Little Pony’ toy; a tree; and Manolo and Jualo (typical Spanish boys). At first the costumes look as if they are playful and a bit of fun and yet they evoke the powerful emotion of a man’s desire to share the joy these objects represent, and a longing that is subverted by isolation.

David Méndez Alonso (MisterTheFreak) and Pau Sampera (Faif) come from a new generation of visual artists, influenced by an amalgamation of graphic design and fine art spanning Swiss Style to Memphis and crossing roads with graffiti, American cartoons and current illustration trends. Together they bring a new visual approach and language to illustration using abstraction of shapes, color and ideas. Méndez has presented several solo exhibitions in European galleries and art fairs, including ARCO 2012 (Madrid), DNA gallery (Berlin) and MUTT gallery (Barcelona). Sampera who is still currently studying Fine Art at The University of Barcelona has painted a number of murals in several festivals including the Open Walls festival in Galicia and has been included in group exhibitions in Spain. Both artists are have been widely published in magazines and take on private and public commissions over the world.

While PEZ was visiting London to set up his first solo show at Tony’s Gallery he was invited to paint with Malarky, Sweet Toof and Dibo.
