Tony’s Gallery is proud to present “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”, the first UK solo exhibition by Polish-born, New York-based artist Olek. Renowned for her use of crocheted yarn as a medium both indoors and on the street, the artist has created a major installation and sculptural environment: a distinctive Olek-esque living quarters filled with domestic objects of all kinds. These, along with the gallery walls and floor, have been entirely covered in crochet.

Both playful and rich in metaphor, the brightly coloured work on display features multiple designs including Olek’s trademark camouflage motif. The omnipresence of explicit messages crocheted into the objects, are statements revealing her position as a female artist in an art world that is inclined to have sexist opinions. These text-based pieces replicate actual missives sent to the artist by SMS text messaging, immortalising intimate details of her past relationships. The viewer thus becomes witness to Olek’s personal history as she continues her exploration of modern day concerns, touching upon the themes of privacy, technology and communication.

For this exhibition, Olek has drawn inspiration from her experiences of living in the UK over the past few months and assimilating into British culture, as reflected in recent works such as her crocheted London black cab, a piece produced outside of Tony’s in November. The show’s title is a direct quote from I do not expect, an appliquéd blanket produced by Tracey Emin in 2002.

Her practice has the striking quality of presenting a double-edged approach whereby the initial impact is colorful, enchanting and almost cartoon-like and yet under this camouflaged skin lies a complex and subversive metaphor for the world as she sees it. She instigates a dialogue between fiction and reality by carefully playing with our ambivalent perception of her work.

The performative nature of her work is an essential element within her practice, from the time-consuming and laborious act of crocheting on immense scales to her active and impromptu positioning of objects in the street as well as her use of participating performers who, dressed in crocheted suits, are part of her environments. This notion of performance instigates an interaction between the artist and viewer who inadvertently takes part in her work either by discovering her objects or by ultimately being positioned within her artistic context.

Later this year, Olek will participate in the Smithsonian American Art Museum exhibition, 40 under 40, which will showcase her entire crocheted studio apartment. She is quickly becoming recognised as an influential artist in the contemporary art world as well as the street art scene, and was recently listed in the Artinfo article See the Women Who Shook Up the Art World in 2011 alongside Anita Zabludowicz, Marina Abramovic and Mera Rubell and has also been listed in “The 25 most important artists of 2011” (http://www.complex.com/art-design/2011/12/the-25-most-important-artists-of-2011 )

Olek was born Agata Oleksiak in 1978 in Poland. In 2000, she received a Bachelor degree in Cultural Studies from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, and relocated to New York City, where she is currently based. Olek’s work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and public spaces worldwide, and featured in numerous publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out NY, Village Voice, CNN, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News. Olek is the recipient of awards including the Ruth Mellon Award for sculpture in 2004, In Situ Artaq award (France) in 2011, and a grant in 2011 from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) for performance in public space. Olek’s residencies have included Sculpture Space in 2005, Instituto Sacatar (Brazil) in 2009 and AAI-LES in 2010. In 2008, Olek was the winner of the Apex Art competition, which aired on PBS. In 2010, the artist was commissioned by the Brooklyn Museum of Art for a one-day interactive performance installation.

All works in the installation are for sale individually, please ask for the PDF price list.

SICKBOY
SICKBOY is a world renowned London based street artist who paints both in and outside the gallery. His symbolic visual language can be seen on walls and wheelie bins worldwide. SICKBOYS temples, slogans and street stunts – including the caged heart installation dropped outside the Tate Modern in 2008 – have landed him global recognition. SICKBOY emerged from Bristol’s infamous graffiti scene and is one of the first UK artists to use a logo in place of a tag. He has built up one of the largest bodies of street art works in UK history and is one of the leading artists in the street art movement. SICKBOY will present a mix of exclusive street and studio pieces specifically for 55EXHIBITION.

OLEK
OLEK is a Polish-born American-residing crochet street and contemporary artist. Her gallery and street work include sculpture, installation, bicycles, cars, people and public monuments (including “Charging Bull”). Her gallery installations include replicating her entire apartment covered in crochet, and its occupants. While her projects may seem like stunts created merely for shock value, they’re anything but. Each piece is conceived with the hope of making people see their everyday world in a bright new way. “I’m taking something very common that everybody is used to and transforming it,” OLEK thrives on turning the seemingly mundane into something worth noticing. http://agataolek.com/home.html

For the 55 gallery show opening OLEK will make a performance by crocheting a person.

She produces rich and detailed illustrations and artworks for private commissions and gallery exhibitions. For the 55GALLERY exhibition Hattie presents four re-worked 55MAGAZINE covers. She has been commissioned by Luella, Illustrated People, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Katie Hillier to name a few. Hattie is constantly multitasking on many projects at any onetime and is currently working on a series of re-worked doodle, drawn and scrawled over magazine covers from; POP. LOVE. S. i:D. DAZED AND CONFUSED + LULA. She took part in the exhibiton “Small Gift” at Art Basel Miami 2010 curated by Roger Gastman and Zio Fulcher, with artists including POSE, Anthony Lister, Shepard Fairey and David McDowell. http://www.hattiestewart.blogspot.com/

CHRISTOPHER SIMS
Christopher Sims is best known for his “high fashion” and music photography and has had work published in fashion and music brands across the world including ELLE, GRAZIA, YOU MAGAZINE, OBSERVER, BBC, CHANEL 4 and SONY to name a few… Christopher has also consulted as an Art and Fashion Director for several magazines and publictions and had a successful career starring in, writing and directing plays. In 2011 Christopher launched a cooperative project titled 55FACTORY based on the Andy Warhol project in NY. The 55FACTORY studio in Camden, London started as an experimental web-based television station interviewing talent from the film, fashion and artistic industries. It soon branched outside of the studio and is now travelling the world following the fashion, film and art industries from Cannes film festival to L.A and from Paris Fashion Week to Art Basel Miami. The 55 brand now boasts an ouput of T.V., magazine, fashion and music photography, parties and exhibitions. This is just the start for the 55 project and there are no limits to Christopher Sims and 55FACTORY.

BERT
At Central St Martins, Bert’s work focused on the effects of trauma and explored creating a space for the expression of pain. It led to the creation of a subversive commercial art collection,’Bert Industries’, a circus of horror and art. The work takes the form of limited edition collections of hand crafted articles or prints, taking its inspiration from anatomy, hospitals, deformity, rituals, curiosity shops, the beauty of horror and a childlike reinterpretation of pain and trauma… all revealing and reveling in a dark sense of humour.
BERT INDUSTRIES is a partnership between Bert, a 1st class scholar of Central Saint Martins and Paul Andrews, Creative Coordinator for the likes of Selfridges. Born in 2003 as a lifestyle brand the duo soon built a cult following, with fans including Dinos Chapman, Bob Geldof, David Thewlis and Anna Friel. Over the years they have presented their commercial Art concepts via a series of exhibitions, showcasing hand printed wallpaper-[‘Noosetime’], Skull jewellery, cashmere comforters and customized Vans shoes for a celebrity charity auction. Described by Dazed and Confused as “the surreal mirth of Monty Python with the macabre of Marliyn Manson” BERT INDUSTRIES continue to quietly work on their bizarrely beautiful incarnations of evil.

BURGER KIM
Like his favourite arcade games, Burger Kim comes at you from every direction. His style is unexpected, but he carries it well. Crazy as a Mickey Mouse jumper and goofy as, well, Goofy. Burger Kim is a fashion icon and walking fashion shoot and quite rightly so he made it into the 55MAGAZINE front cover. Burger Kim studied fashion at Central Saint Martins and for the 55GALLERY Burger has fashioned three very mad designed hats. Don’t miss his awkward video interview. http://casting.benetton.com/profile/2397-burger-kim

BILLY – LUCAS – MALARKY – MR PENFOLD
11 November – 18 December

Opening: Thursday 10 November 6-9pm

Tony’s is pleased to present “Neo Cosmo” a group exhibition featuring works by Malarky, Billy, Lucas and Mr Penfold.

The four artists united in this exhibition have been collaborating together outside of the gallery walls and onto the streets of London, Barcelona, Berlin and Italy, in recent months. Their love to paint on a large scale and their often impromptu and spontaneous teamwork has enabled them to make their mark on our urban landscape – and bringing together unique styles into a symbiotic street work where the interactions between one another are clear. Their brash colours, bold and clear-cut subjects and expressionistic characters convey an optimism and light-heartedness accessible to all.

The street art movement has evolved into new genres and these artists see their work as revisiting the origins of the art form and aim to brighten up and enhance the environment we live in.

The exhibition will feature individual works by each artist as well collaborative works created as a result of the ongoing dialogue between them. Malarky has been in studio residence at Tony’s over the past few months with the gallery becoming the meeting place for the four artists’ spearheaded actions in the area.

Malarky spends his time between Barcelona and London and paints joyful pieces very much defined by the exuberance and festive fever brought in from the Catalan region. His brightly coloured characters of various patterns and textures brighten up the East End streets where creatures such as foxes, cats, robots and bats, punctuate and morph within the landscape. Malarky’s foxes in particular relate back to the notion of painting on shutters as well as street artists and the way that these animals, similarly to shutters and street artists, hide away during the day to reappear at night time.

Malarky’s most impressive mural round the corner on Redchurch Street entitled “Malarkistani Riots” refers back to the riots of this summer – this fifty foot long frieze portrays a parade of the artist’s most characteristic characters with big carnival heads, and their little stripy legs visible, running along underneath.

Lucas’ work has been influenced by growing up in Belfast, and seeing how graffiti and murals can be used to convey powerful messages. Despite using the same process, Lucas’ message however is more light-hearted and through painting shop shutters and walls, he intends to create a more positive environment. “You can really capture people’s attention when injecting colour into public space”. Lucas’ work is influenced by pop culture with particular references to skateboard graphics, record covers and comics coupled with his interest in fine art which he has developed further with his recent BA (?) in Sculpture from Camberwell University.

Growing up under three elder, creative brothers and artistic parents, Mr Penfold has always had a pen or brush in his hand. After leaving school at 16, he worked in a skate shop where he became obsessed with skate stickers and branding. It was at this time that he was drawn back towards graffiti and street art. At the age of 18 he started working in a pub were he observed the regulars and started to draw them to pass the time. Many of the characters and features present in his work today partly originate from this period. Mr Penfold is currently working as an artist and screen printer living in Cambridge.

Billy is a British artist currently living and working in Berlin. Having spent some years in South Africa as a teenager, Billy’s work is clearly inspired by traditional and contemporary African and tribal culture. The distinctive shapes, colours, characters and symbols in Billy’s work are defined by an illustrative background and an interest in typography. From digital illustrations and animations to large outdoor wall murals, the adaptability of Billy’s work ensures that the distinctive style can be seen across a range of media in all shapes and sizes.

Lawson’s work often makes dreamlike landscapes out of domestic furnishings and she explains them as holding “a sense of domestic psychodrama, where often disparate household objects collide with each other or explode, creating a sort of animated hybrid that has a quietly sinister inner life and aspirations to be bigger than itself”. Her inlaid wooden panels take you on a journey through the psychological landscape of the public and private interior, sometimes unearthing intimate and shocking secrets that have been sublimated into the patina of daily life.

Recent solo shows include: Our House at the McManus Galleries, Dundee, supported by the Scottish Arts Council; Living Rooms at Nordisk Kunst Plattform, Norway, supported by the British Council; and Chairway To Heaven at The Economist Plaza, commissioned by the Contemporary Art Society. Forthcoming shows include Metafigura, part of the Fourth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.

Since bursting on to the street art scene in 2007, Bortusk’s grinning, googly eyed creations in Tutti Fruitti, day-glo neons have become a common sight on the streets of London and new York, but have managed to stray as far afield as Auckland, Alaska and Rajasthan.
Proud leader (and founder) of the “Art Comedy” movement, Bortusk claims his sole purpose in life is to make you smile. Inspired by the idea that life is often taken too seriously and a dream of a world where we all laugh alittle more, Bortusk now dedicates his child-like painting style, love of psychedelic colours and prolific pasting to his “CHEER UP” campaign.

Over the past 4 years Bortusk Leer has exhibited in several London based group shows such as The Alternative Philosophy at Leonard Street Gallery and Mutate Britain at Cordy House. During the course of these shows his work has strayed into the realms of video, collage and sculpture, re-awakening an interest in 3D and installation art. In 2009 Bortusk’s monsters were made into ‘Street Monsters’, a series of 2 minute animations which were commissioned by the BBC.

Sex in the Afternoon
8 September – 23 October 2011

Tony’s is pleased to present a solo exhibition by the British artist Debbie Lawson. The exhibition will feature an extensive collection of inlaid wooden panels and carpet sculptures.

Lawson’s work is included in a number of prominent collections such as that of the House of Lords, the Saatchi Gallery, Mario Testino and the University of the Arts London. She has recently shown work alongside Jeff Koons, Gary Hume and Grayson Perry in ‘Contemporary Eye: Crossovers’ at Pallant House Gallery, and is currently showing in “Ha Ha Road”, at QUAD Derby, alongside Pipilotti Rist, Bedwyr Williams and Erwin Wurm. Born in Dundee, Lawson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2004 with an MA in Sculpture and now lives and works in east London.

The exhibition will centre on presenting the aftermath of a western style “showdown” using paint-filled fire extinguishers. “A FIST FULL OF PAINT”

Friday 8 July – Sunday 21 August
Private View: Thursday 7 July 6-9pm

Tony’s is pleased to present “A FIST FULL OF PAINT”, an exhibition by East London’s notorious Burning Candy (B.C.) crew.

The exhibition will centre on presenting the aftermath of a western style “showdown” using paint-filled fire extinguishers. Two B.C. members were let loose in a wild, head to head, battle using high pressured paint, and leaving behind the gestural process of their actions, as well as a filmed documentary, reflecting the bigger picture of the competitive, fun and extreme nature of the graffiti world. Tony’s will stage this performative and yet subversive encounter, turning what may at once be perceived as an act of vandalism into a playful comment on the art world and its systems of presentation.

The show will feature new works including paintings, drawings and limited-edition prints as well as an on-going screening of exclusive un-released footage from the B.C produced DOTS film. For this occasion, twenty limited edition box-sets including the four segments of the film to date, nine prints by the BC crew and a limited edition t-shirt by Mighty Mo will be made available!

Prolific in their home London B.C. have gone on to spread their signature insignias across the United Kingdom and as far as Sweden to Bombay and from Paris to Bangkok, leaving fully covered buildings and walls in their wake. A unifying language can be recognized despite a sense of individualism from each member; no particular style is adhered to and yet, a shared honest and bright design within their work unites them in their perfect rendition of the surrealist exquisite corpse, as well as their common belief in a resistance to the ever increasing corporate sterilisation of urban landscapes.

B.C. have exhibited in a number of high profile exhibitions, and have starred in Channel 4’s 3 Minute Wonder series alongside Blek Le Rat and Pure Evil. Work by B.C. and its members (many of whom studied fine art at institutions including the Royal College of Art) have been featured in the Saatchi Gallery Collection, as well as numerous private collections around the world.
